SBMC development

Through ESSPIN, members of civil-society and government partnership (CGP) have been supported to work together to activate, train and provide follow-up mentoring support to more than 10,000 SBMCs in six states. The model has been adopted and scaled up by Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) in every State in Nigeria.

SBMCs act as the vehicle for community participation and voice in establishing inclusive, quality, basic education services. SBMCs play a strong role in supporting access and retention of children in school, especially for marginalised groups who previously had limited voice. SBMCs become active in understanding why children in their community are out of school, and take action at community level to support excluded groups, particularly girls, children from nomadic communities and children with disabilities. SBMCs recognise that children who get to school might remain excluded because of circumstances within the school, so they monitor school inclusion, protection and quality and provide a community voice in school management decision making. SBMCs have been successful in generating resources for schools and represent a 500% return on investment.
